Food: 4321 Scones

A few Sundays ago, I decided to make scones for afternoon tea. Because I am just that kind of gal… I decided that I would Instagram each step. Because I am that kind of gal.

Here is the process of making scones using the

4-3-2-1- Method of Scone Makingness….

The 4321 refers to the ingredients

4 – cups of Self Raising Flour

3 – 300mls of milk

2 – 200mls of cream

1 – 1 pinch of salt

1) Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celcius

2) Sift  4 cups of flour into a large bowl

3) Add 300mls of milk

4) Add 200 mls of milk

5) Add a pinch of salt

6) Mix with a knife

7) Turn onto a floured board and kneed gently, this is a very soft dough, so don’t do too much to it. If it is too dry, add some more milk.

8) Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper

9) Cut the scone dough into squares. Round scones are SOOOO yesterday {and they require you to roll and re-roll all that dough – who has the time for THAT!}

10) Place the scones on a tray, crowd them in, they like it. When they are close together they will rise UP rather than spread out. Infact, these were a little far apart to be honest!

11) Brush the scones with milk. Do this, it makes them nice and brown and glossy. I use my fingers, I hate washing up pastry brushes!

12) Pop them into your preheated oven for about 15-20 mins… Until nice and brown on top – you will be able to smell when they are ready!

Enjoy your delicious hot scones with butter and jam and lots of cups of tea… YUM!!

How do you make your scones?

  1. I make square scones too Belinda. My Nanna always made them like that as well. Makes sense to me. I usually use the butter rubbed into the flour scone recipe. I sometimes do the lemonade/cream recipe, if I have both of those ingredients on hand. I’ll have to give your recipe a try. I had a friend in the US wanting a recipe for our ‘scones’ so I might have to link up this recipe, if that’s ok?
