I can’t believe that I decided to do the sugar free thing as a last ditch effort to get over the wretched tiredness I have been experiencing for the last six months, but now, it is the coolest thing to be doing and like, everyone, is doing it! I did not set out to do the latest THANG, I just wanted to do something healthy, for me… But thanks to 60 Minutes a few weeks ago and the buzz around the place about being sugar free, I feel like I am a lemming.
Having said that, so many people have said that they just wouldn’t be able to do what I have done. I have been through the detox, I have been through the withdrawal and I am now so sensitive to sugar that my body will not process it {I won’t bore you with the gory details}.
I think that anyone can kick the sugar addiciton. But, not unless you WANT to and not if you are unwilling to go through a tough week or two before you start feeling better. I would say to enter into this cautiously.
So… I thought I would put together a list of some things that I eat that are lower in sugar and challenge you to do some swapping. If you don’t want to go off sugar completely, then why not at least reduce the amounts that you take in.
Drinks
Soda water with diet cordial
Cappacinos
Herbal Tea
Black Tea
Dry red wine
Coke Zero (very rarely these days)
Breakfast
Porridge with full fat yogurt and some shredded coconut
Haloumi and eggs on toast
Bacon and eggs on toast
Mushroom omelette
French Toast and bacon
Lunch
Leftovers are always good!
Soup and crackers
Crackers and dip
Tuna and salad wraps
Antipasto with sour dough bread
Hot Chips and Meat Pies (sometimes)

I hope that these very brief lists help you see that you can still eat yummy things when you don’t eat sugar.
Can I just give a HUGE shout out to Mr Cool, he is always so supportive of the things that I do and helps me in so many ways. Last week, at the half time break of State of Origin, he got up and pan fried haloumi and served it with a lovely deep red wine. That man is such a keeper!
Now it is over to you #teamfriday crew!

Hi there B, glad you are feeling cool. So many mums I know are trying sugar free, and my sister has done it for a long time. I must read more about it and give it a go, just to be in with the in crowd! But seriously, I know there are lots of yummy alternatives which would be especially good to make for my kids.
I am in transports at the thought of mustard risotto – post the recipe, do! Also totally agree that there are so many lovely things to eat that are not sugar-based and also that are not white and artificial. I am a great nut lover, it’s hard to not eat too many, but am getting better at that too.

Doh! I knew I forgot something when I hit ‘Publish’ last night… I was meant to link in all my recipes! I have done it now, so head on over for the recipe for my ‘Oven baked wholegrain mustard risotto’ – it is delicious!
You really should go sugar free lovey, it is sooooooo in right now! {Tongue firmly in cheek of course}.
Did you use the ‘Sweet Poison’ book as your starting point?????
Yes, I used the Quit Plan version to start with. Then I read sweet poison. Then I read Sarah Wilson’s book… Are you thinking of doing this too you cool cat?
Thanks for the list of things that don’t have sugar in them – really is good to know that if I decide to go down this path there is someone I ‘know’ who has been before me and can help and that if I do this I am not totally denying myself.
Thanks again for organising Team Friday – I love to join in !!!
Have a great day – love, hugs and positive energy.

Some really great ideas there for some sugar-free food ideas. I’ve been trying to cut back a bit, but I find I just go for the same foods everytime so gets a bit boring.

Thanks, Hayley

Do it when you don’t have any big celebrations… I waited until AFTER my daughter’s birthday, the look on her face when I said I couldn’t eat cake made me realise that I had to wait… Poor thing!
Yum!!! That looks like awesome, you’d never know that it’s a low sugar diet

I am often surprised by the things I can eat, I am loving not counting points or measuring things, my body tells me when I have had enough. It has been great! I am loving eating nuts again and I have had more cheese in the last month than in my whole LIFE! Some yummy cheeses out there too!
Good for you Belinda. Tell me, did you notice if you lost any weight going sugar free?

I have lost around 4kg over the month with no exercise… I will start getting back into exercise as of tomorrow. My thyroid is fine {thanks blood tests} and I am now getting itchy feet to get out again… I have really enjoyed the process and it just gets easier and easier…
I joined in with Team Friday for the first time – hope I did it right!

You did! And such a great post! Thanks heaps lovely!
My bestie visited the other night & she’s looking so great and has lost 4kg also. You girls are really inspiring me to give it a shot. I’m having surgery in a couple of weeks so maybe I’ll start then – at least I’ll already feel crap so I won’t notice the withdrawals as much!! Sorry didn’t link this week xxx
