I have decided to crochet a blanket.
This may not seem to be anything majorly big, but to me, it has been soooo great for me!
I wrote a few weeks ago that I needed to find some balance in my life. I needed to do some REAL things not just sit at my computer and imagine a great life. I needed to do something with my hands. I needed to do something creative, and big. I needed a project.
Of course, CraftyMummy inspired me with her crochet blanket. But, I knew that I had to choose something that was achieveable for me. In other words it had to be simple. So I decided to make a blanket for BabyCool. I thought I would make it for his cot in colours that matched the BEAUTIFUL quilt CraftyMummy made for him.
So… I just started. It started with one chain stitch, then about one hundred more… Then row after row of triple crochet stitches and I am on my way to a blanket. The girls love seeing the change in colours and we have talked about what colour comes next and which is their favourite.
It has been so refreshing! I have sat in the sun and crocheted. I have crocheted in bed on the weekends and I have brought it to ballet. As dorky as that sounds, I have really enjoyed doing something with my hands. I have enjoyed seeing the project grow and I am enjoying being away from my computer. As much as I love blogging, it can be a bit claustrophobic for me at times.
I have thought about all kinds of things while making this blanket. I have made some HUGE mental connections. It has been great! I have allowed time to think. To just let my head go wherever it wanted it to go. I have realised that a lot of things I have been putting off lately all begin with one tiny thing, then done over and over and over again. Like:
- Getting back into running – it just takes one little jog every other day and before I know it, I will be ‘running’ again.
- Losing wieght – I don’t have to lose 5 kg tomorrow, it takes little increments.
- Cleaning the house – I don’t have to wash windows, de clutter, chuck stuff out all in one day, I have to just start and make sure I do something each day.
- Being a better blogger – I am not going to be Nikki Parkinson tomorrow… But, if I take little steps and small connections over and over again, I have more of a chance of getting somewhere than if I did nothing over and over again…
So… the simple act of crocheting a blanket has triggered all sorts of things in my head. It has been great.
Do you have something that you do with your hands that means you just sit still?
It is all the rage to be crocheting, knitting, crafting at the moment… These are very simple things that are easy to work out how to do … Really, if I can work it out, ANYONE can!

I am linking in with Kate Says Stuff for Thankful Thursday…

That’s great Belinda. I so need to do this as well. I think half my problem is information overload. I pin so many projects as well as read so many blogs, with projects I like, styles I like etc etc. I’m forever adding more to the database but not putting out anything. I’ve given myself a lot of down time lately, away from the computer but I just need to find a little bit extra to start ‘doing’.

Crocheting is helping me stay sane while I am recuperating from my surgery. Have made about 3 baby hats already

I spent Sunday and Monday at my Mum’s and we knitted and crocheted together and so did the girls. (Yes a five year old can knit, who knew) It is lovely to chat and do something creative and let your mind work over all the ‘stuff’ going on in your life. I find that colouring-in works the same way for the kids. If you sit down and colour all sorts of things enter the conversation that may not do otherwise.
Oh, you’re a clever sausage! I have started a weekly dance class with a group of friends. We’ve done flash mobs for two parties now (YouTube links on my blog) and the next one is for an Austin Powers 50th in July. Not quite crochet and craft but it has given me much more than I’ve given!

I love crocheting and knitting – my Gran taught me when I was little. I do both and give scarves and blankets to my Mom who knows someone who runs a charity and they give them to some needy people – it is what I can do to help those less fortunate. I don’t tend to take it with me (we don’t have littlies who play sport or go to dancing) so I tend to only do it when I am watching TV or if we go for a long drive in the car.
I have taken to sneaking the yarn I buy into the house because K gives me such a hard time about how much yarn I have and wonders aloud if I will ever use it all – I will, I know I will – maybe she is scared I am going to die and she is going to be left with it all !!!!
I also have some clients who have had babies and I have made them blankets – they all seem to love them and I have seen them in use so that is always good too.
I love watching what I am making grow and feel a real sense of accomplishment when I am finished plus I know that there is someone somewhere out there that will get some use out of what I have made.
Good for you for getting started – once the bug bites it is hard to stop it !!!
Have a great Friday – will be linking up tomorrow but probably only later in the evening.

I think your blanket is going to look great when finished! I can’t wait to see it. I too have started crocheting again, although I still have no idea what this is going to end up as or who will get it. Just square by square at this point. You can come and coffee and crochet at my house with baby cool anytime you like!
Good on you Belinda. I love crocheting, although my motivation does tend to wane with actually picking up the hook.
