Fashion: How To Shop With A Friend

Shopping with a friend can be one of the best ways to bond, especially when you can take the time to stop for lunch or a coffee! But, have you ever been asked to go shopping with a friend who has asked you to help find a specific item? It can be a tricky place to be… But, never fear, I have some tips for you.

  1. Be clear about whether your friend wants your opinion or your company.
  2. Be sure to know what your friend is looking for and details of the occasion, if there is one.
  3. Don’t try to persuade her to buy the latest bling covered tight fitting extravaganza if that is just not her style, be sensitive.
  4. Don’t be distracted by shoes for yourself if you are on a mission to find her a gorgeous dress for a wedding, help her first and foremost.
  5. Encourage her to look in stores that she doesn’t normally go into, fresh racks of clothes open up so many new possibilities!
  6. Do encourage her to try a new colour or a new style, sometimes a little encouragement from a friend can help quick step her right back into a current style.
  7. If something doesn’t suit her, be honest. Don’t let her buy something that just doesn’t suit her. Really, give her honesty, but do it gently.
  8. On the other hand, if she really insists on buying the neon yellow tube dress and won’t be swayed, don’t be too hard on yourself. It was her choice after all.
  9. Check that she has shoes and accessories that match or if she can wear the item with other things.
  10. When things seem to be going nowhere, stop for a coffee. Just sitting down for a spell and talking about the weather can refresh and energise you both for round two!

Happy shopping with your peeps!

  1. As someone who has shopped with my peeps, including you, I know you follow all this advice.

I especially like your advice to encourage your friend to try on things she wasn’t going to to try – I have bought things that I would never had tried if you hadn’t been there to prod me!

But we wouldn’t talk about the weather over the coffee!! There are so many other things to talk about…

    • Well, lovely lady – you inspired me to write this post!

The next post you have to help me write is: Why you should never go to Sydney with only cabin luggage. ;0) OR – Travelling to Sydney with only a toothbrush in a big huge check in suitcase! Yes, option 2 is better!

  2. I will take these advices. I know this will sound weird but i like to shop by myself… I find it difficult to shop with a friend. I mean if it’s just to browse around, no problem but if I’m on a mission to find something specific, then,i never know what to say.

    • I am better at shopping on my own too! But, I have a few people who ask me to shop with them for something specific. I love it! I do love shopping and I also love giving my opinion and I love spending other people’s money! Win, win, win really!

  3. I’m a bit like Rita and tend to shop on my own, or have the husband in tow. Mr. Mandie is a lady-man and lurves a good shop… I must say, some of my best clothing purchases have been ones he has spotted and suggested I try on (they also often display a fair bit of boob… hmmmm).
    Great tips as always, B!

    • Mr Cool loves shopping too! He doesn’t often suggest things though – but he does give a good opinion when asked. He is great company and takes the children out of dressing rooms which is so great!

      Thanks for visiting!

  4. Great advice! I haven’t been shopping with a friend in living memory… need to get on to that asap!

    • Oh yes, you do! A whole new level to your friendship! But, finding the time is tricky…. Le Sigh.

  5. Great advice! Having been on the receiving end of a lot of these tips, I can vouch for them. Unfortunately, I am guilty of number 4 most often when I’m supposed to be the one helping 😉

    • Haha! It is easy to get distracted, especially by shoes!

Thanks for visiting, great to have you here!

  6. Great tips! I am about to be on the other end of this though. I am (not-so-patiently) waiting for my tax return to come in so that I can go shopping for some new clothes. It will be so awesome to get out of these daggy, stained, 2-3 years old clothes! Bring on the shopping trip with the bestie!

    • Funny! Shame that the shoes hurt your feet but great that they looked great!

Thanks for commenting on my blog post. I am intrigued to read your post about just that, heading there now!

  8. I like to keep it all in the family – my favourite people to shop with are my sister, and my daughter. 🙂

    • Lovely, I do hope that they give you good advice though! My sisters have VERY different tastes in clothes, we simply cannot shop together, unless only recreationally. *Whispered* I am better at shopping on my own…

    • Umm… I wonder what that says about US!?

I am the same. I know what I like, I know what suits me and I know where to get it. I don’t often buy things, but I sure do keep an eye out for what I think is cool, I keep a running list of things I like!

  10. A and K are the ones who normally come shopping with me and tend to be the ones who suggest I try things on. Me, I really can’t be bothered most of the time – the two of them would shop from morning to night if they had the money !!!!

Love the suggestions for shopping with a friend – if only I liked to shop !!!

Have a great week and I hope things work out so we can meet on Saturday !
    Love, hugs and positive energy.

    • You don’t like to shop? I just can’t comprehend that. My mind can’t work that out. ;0)

I am not sure if I will be making it on Saturday, Mr Cool and I need to get our diaries out and check whether I have the time… A few other things on this weekend….

  11. I’m the worst representation of a woman sometimes, particularly in this area. I hate shopping. And i hate shopping, esp clothes shopping with female friends. LOL! I really did like your suggestions though – I may have to *cough* pass them on for people who get stuck shopping with me heh heh

  13. Oh how I miss shopping with a friend! Usually my shopping expeditions are a quick trip around Westfields in between nap times and I spend more time buying milkshakes, toilet/nappy breaks and breastfeeding than I do shopping!
