Wordless Wednesday – Are You Happy In The Coop Or Out?

We have 4 chickens. They live in the ‘Chook Mahal’ in the backyard and give us lovely fresh eggs every day. We feed them scraps and love them for their quirky chickenness…

Over the past few days, we have discovered that one of our chickens {wearing groovy red glasses} is not content to be cooped up in the ‘Chook Mahal’ anymore…

A few times a day she gets out, we have no idea how. She enjoys pecking at the grass and digging up some grubs.

By the time it is dark she gets back into the coop and roosts with the other chickens.

This had me thinking about life and coops…

Are you happy in your coop?

Do you know how to get out?

Are there things that you would do if you weren’t limited to the confines of a coop?

What new things could you experience if you weren’t fenced in?

What is fencing you in?

Interesting to ponder huh?

My Little Drummer Boys

Linking in with Trish from My Little Drummer Boys for Wordless Wednesday. {Sorry Trish, I am TERRIBLE at the wordless thing… I am a writer – I can’t help it!} But – there are loads of bloggers who are GREAT at the Wordless thing – you should all go and check them out!

Oh, and if you are wondering about the sunglasses on the chicken – I have been playing with picmonkey… It is a bit of fun!

  1. I’m quite sad to say that I am content in my coop. I spent years when I was younger trying to stretch my wings, and now I’m very happy with my lot in life, and don’t want the grass anywhere else!
I’ve decided that the grass is greener where I water it. :)

  2. I’m content in my coop, as long as the door is open so I can see that I can get out when I need to. Of course, I’ll always return, after all, it’s home!
PS, is that a Merry-go-round horse in the background? – LOVE
PPS we’re big chook fans here, my 17month old is sometimes allowed to collect the eggs from the neighbour’s chooks – it’s her most favourite chore :)

    • Yes, we have a carousel horse in the back garden. Her name is Rosalyn. We love her dearly.

We have really enjoyed having chickens, very easy pets. And fresh eggs – there is nothing like it!

Hmmm… having a door open in the coop… that sounds like what blogging is for me! A door into another zone where I can tune out to the pecking and fussing in the coop… Too deep for this time of night? Sorry!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Can chickens get air? Maybe she launches herself over the fence. Lucky they are not sheep, otherwise the rest would follow.

    • She definitely flies out… I don’t understand why the others don’t try as well…

This particular chicken lost all her feathers a few months ago. I was so upset! I decided to isolate her from the other chickens as they seemed to be picking on her. So, I let her free range during the day and she slept in our garden shed at night. I fed her the very best scraps and gave her lots of pats. After about a week of this, she started to jump back into the coop at night, so we just let her do that. Eventually, we let her stay in the coop during the day too as her feathers starting growing back, which we thought meant she was all better.

I went out the chicken farm we bought our birds from and told the lovely farmer about it. He laughed and said that chickens moult at the start of winter. He asked about our other birds, they had not lost any feathers. He laughed again.

It would seem we gave special treatment to the hen who was actually the healthiest of the chickens! It was the other chickens who would have benefited from being allowed to free range and get the special extra love.

Ever since, the sunglass wearing chicken has been getting out to eat grass and dig up the gardens… and we let her.

Sorry about the comment bomb… I wanted to add this in the post, but it is WORDLESS Wednesday and I just don’t do that well!

  6. Love the groovy glasses! That is one cool bird! I would love to have a couple of chooks. As for me – I think I’m mostly happy in my coop, I get out and about when I want but have safety and security for home base. Can’t get much better than that!
