Life: Mr Cool the SAHD – Thankful Thursday

The other day Mr Cool stayed home to be with a sick baby while I went to work in the salt mines school.

So… while I was at work these are the things Mr Cool did:

  • Dishes
  • Washed clothes
  • Made the Beds
  • Folded Washing
  • Drank coffee
  • Had morning tea in the sun
  • Guided BabyCool to sleep
  • Had a nap
  • Made himself tomato & camembert toasted wraps for lunch
  • Drank coffee
  • Tidied Up
  • Did some work
  • Sent me photos
  • Folded more washing
  • Stacked blocks with BabyCool and taught him how to knock them over with his head
  • Drank coffee

When I got home {slightly twitching from the process of gathering the other two children from their various places around the school}, Mr Cool was chipper and sprouting on about how much he would love to be a Stay At Home Dad.

I was pleased he had a nice day. Really, I was. Part of me was a little miffed that he enjoyed it so much. The other part of me was thinking of the hundreds of things I would have tried to get done that didn’t even blip his radar. The other part of me was worried that if by some chance of fate, Mr Cool was able to be a Stay At Home Dad, he would see just how much time I fluff around doing nothing much!

But mainly, I felt thankful. Thankful that I have such a great husband who is willing to stay at home to be with a sick baby boy who just wasn’t up to being minded by someone else. I am thankful that he knows how to take care of my children and that he knows that I do not like it when he puts my folding away. I am thankful that there is no way I could earn what he does, so he kind of has no chance of being the one to faff about and stay at home.

  1. I like Mr Cool! My hubby is like that, happy to do his part and eager to stay at home. I don’t think I could handle him staying home though, it takes a lot of work to keep our house clean and I just don’t think he has the same standards that I do lol

  2. B! I am most impressed that he got on with the business of doing the laundry and then folding the washing! That is most impressive… although i am a little jealous of all this food in the sun business. hmph.

  3. I love that someone else’s husband can stay at home and look after sick children and do the chores !!!!! I hear so many women complaining because Dad’s can’t look after children and I wonder if it is because they have never been allowed to !!! It’s great that he can take over like that. A was exactly the same – actually, in all honesty, he was probably better with a sick child than I was because he has more patience.
Love the idea of being able to sit in the sun and have lunch – that would be really good to do !!
Have the best day today – love, hugs and positive energy !

    • My mum has often commented about the fact that our children behave exactly the same whether Mr Cool or I am around. There is none of that ‘let’s goof around because daddy is here’ business. We do so much together and we parent in such a similar way that our kids are really settled.

I think it is awesome when dads step in to help, and I think you are right, they need to be given the chance more.

      Mwah!

  4. hehe I know my husband would be a better SAHM than I currently am.. but luckily.. he earns way more than me and its not viable :) *phew* :) He knows I fluff.. he just has requests that certain things are done by the weekend.. so I have all week to do them (or one friday afternoon!)

  5. I so wanna see a pic of baby cool knocking blocks over with his head. ;)
I think my hubby would collapse in a heap if the tables were turned. That’s ok coz I collapse in a heap a lot of the time anyway.

    • I shall get you a photo. And I shall put it on Instagram. It is a sight, very very cute!

I don’t think I could handle the pressure of the job Mr Cool does. Three kids and a box of Oreos can tip me over the edge… don’t know how he deals with some of the things he does!

  6. What a good hubby! Mr.P is thankfully good like that too, I don’t know what I’d do without him. In fact he has the day off today and is being a SAHD. I am doubting though that any housework will get done, his excuse? He’s on holidays! He did take the munchkin to the gym with his and put her in the creche and she had a great time apparently. He’s always saying he would love to be a SAHD but like you, he thankfully earns too much for it to be feasible for him to stay home!

  7. On the days Mr Handyman is ‘home’ with the kids? They are all outside together doing important tasks. This is translated to mean the Mr is playing with his tools in his shed (not a euphemism) and the kids are filthy but happy from playing outside. Nothing is done inside. Not. A. Thing. But they’re all smiling ;)

    • Funny!

There have been times when Mr Cool has caught me at the door upon my arrival home to say, “I know the kids are filthy, I will wash their pyjamas, BUT – they have had the loveliest time.”

It is nice for kids to have a change of pace and be allowed to do things that {their mean and nasty mummy doesn’t allow – or -} they normally wouldn’t be allowed to do.

  8. Yes it always amuses me when the hubster used to mind the kids and that was ALL he’d do all day … he wouldn’t think about let alone do some cooking, cleaning or washing … and feel like such a hero! (I mean, of course he is, but a multi-tasker he ain’t LOL)

    • Mr Cool is awesome {when given a list}… Just kidding – he is really very on the ball with things like that. But, he is also great at just hanging out with the kids – which is something I am not so good at.

  10. Haha! Nice one Mr Cool! Every now and then ST makes murmerings about being the SAHP for a bit. Then I remind him of the endlessly mundane things that go with the staying home bit and he changes his mind pretty quickly ;p

    • Haha… yes… I don’t know if Mr Cool knows how much mundane drudgery goes into being a housewife… {But, there is also lots of room for friends, coffee, blogging, shopping and other fun things – but let’s not tell the menfolk!}
