Home: 15 Things I Am Learning While Cleaning My House

I am currently about to start on Day 7 of The Organised Housewife 20 Day Challenge. I am the kind of girl who needs a challenge to do … well… pretty much anything. I have to make a sport out of anything.

I have been telling myself for the last little while that my house is in great order considering I have three marauding delightful children. But, after starting this challenge, I have realised that I have not been doing NEARLY enough to keep my house looking and feeling good.

Here are 15 Things I have discovered over the last week:

1. That my house has been in terrible state for quite a while

2. That I have not been spending nearly enough time keeping my house in order

3. That although I am clean, I am not naturally tidy

4. That organising an area of the house feels so good

5. That an organised house is soooo much quicker to clean

6. That knowing my house is clean and tidy means I am more comfortable inviting people over

7. That to be organised means spending a bit of time, creativity and money to get something that works

8. That an uncluttered, organised house is really FREEING

9. That when I am finished, a whole heap of my brain will be free from the dreaded ‘Shoulds’ in regards to cleaning

10. That I am teaching my children how to be more organised

11. That my children are playing with their toys more because things are organised

12. That my husband is totally impressed by the ‘before’ and ‘after’ results

13. That I used to waste a LOT of time on anything but cleaning

14. That to keep my house in an organised state is going to take time and dedication

15. For a house to be a home, it needs to be clean, fresh, organised and attractive

This challenge has come just at the right time for me, I needed to get the ‘Spring Cleaning’ done and I am loving seeing my house return to being a comfortable lovely little home. A funny thing is happening to me during this process though… the more my house is in order, the more I am wanting to get my LIFE in order again! I am off the dentist and my lovely skin doctor, I have started exercising again and am taking better care of my nails. I am feeling all inspired to get back to BEING COOL not just muddling my way through my weeks.

I bet Kat from The Organised Housewife knew this would happen…

Is your house clean?  Is your house organised?

  1. I am yet to join the challenge! I like to do these things in my own time, when I’m ready, and not just cause everyone else is. But I have been doing bits and pieces from the posts when I’ve got a spare minute

  2. look at you go lovely lady!! Awesome results – and I am glad it has made you feel so much better :) just be kind to yourself as well though – sometimes all we can manage is clean. If we managed tidy 24/7 then we wouldnt spend much time doing anything else ha ha ;)

  5. I am fairly organised. I am not as good as I was before children, but I am happy to have people over and they usually comment on how neat it is (just don’t look in the cupboards)

  6. Is it clean? Is it organised? I could say it used to be… before the other half moved in. That said, I should do something about it.
Our house IS clean… just not organised or tidy right now. *sigh*
Glad you are finding positives and I hope it stays that way! x

  7. You have done an awesome job, B and you are so right. I’ve recently done a MASSIVE spring clean, which coincided with new furniture.

I am actually happy to clean now that I know it’s going to look perfect when it’s done. It’s hard when you’ve got projects on the go x

  9. I so wanted to do this with you B but … hmm, ok, I’m looking for excuses as to why I didn’t now … I don’t have any. It has inspired me though. My house is ok on the surface and reasonably clean and tidy but it’s amazing (for amazing read horrifying) what you discover when you dig a little deeper. I’m going to make the effort to tick a few things off the list starting with the fridge today!

  10. Couldn’t agree more with your 15! I’m a bit of a cleaning freak. And a tidy freak. And there is a huge difference between clean and tidy! Great post B x

  11. awesome!
Really I can’t keep up with my kids’ messes. And it’s easier to clean myself than to make them do it. Cleaning is a good habit. So i will do to teach my children how to be more organized

  12. I cannot wait until our renovation and extension is all finished. Then everything can be clean, tidy, and things can be put away in a spot that they will stay. It won’t just be a Spring clean, it will be a Four Seasons In One Day clean!
