Life: School Holidays – Planning

Right, so the school holidays are upon us… Are we ready? Are we braced?

Holidays can be tough, children like routine and when you don’t normally work with the school routine, it can be daunting…

I thought I would post a little think tank of ideas to get you through your two week break from making lunches…

Planning….

  • Plan some surprises – kids love them and they keep you in the good books
  • Plan something nice and then tell your kids about it – the build up can be just as fun
  • Plan meals in advanced so when the dreaded ‘I’m Hungry’ drones begin, you are prepared
  • Ask your children what kinds of things they might like to do on their holidays {mine always surprise me when I ask this!}
  • Tell your kids what the plan is for the day eg – after breakfast we will do…. then after lunch we will do… then we might… I find this really helps my children know what to expect from each part of the day
  • Don’t plan every minute

Fun things, that are virtually free….

  • Head to a park with a picnic morning tea
  • Find some ducks to feed
  • Go to the library
  • Visit someone
  • Bake some biscuits
  • Ask some friends to come over and play
  • Turn the dining room into a restuarant and plan a fun family meal for when dad comes home
  • Go out into the garden and plant some seeds
  • Jump on the trampoline and use pool noodles for jousting
  • Do some crafty things
  • Write letters to friends and then deliver them

We love doing things together, but my girls often think that to have fun – we have to buy food. I agree, this is fun, but it gets a bit expensive. So, I am going to try really hard over these holidays to have fun without the sting of take-away… I would rather spend the money on fun memories than food!

What sorts of things do you have planned?

  1. Okay, so my child is just on perpetual school holidays :-) Your list is pretty much our weekly schedule on repeat, but I have a few other things that we do occasionally to mix it up: make a cubby with blankets/pillows, paint our nails and toenails together (I cut hers at the same time), fill up the bath, add food colouring or kitchen toys and let her go for it, go for a gigantic walk, head to the bookstore and pick out a new book to buy (we use her piggy bank money), look up videos on YouTube about things she’s interested in, and good old fashioned singalongs.
