Draw Me October: The Chalk Loveheart – A Short Short Story

The morning began with songs; the birds, the radio and Mr Solomon singing in the shower next door. Gwendolyn tried to convince herself that it was not yet time to face the day. She buried her head into her pillow and tried to remember where she was up to in her dream.

Gwendolyn loved how the words of songs came to her and reminded her of times gone by.The words from her favourite song of her youth came back to her as she started the shower. What did this mean? Why was she thinking of these things now? Why did she have to analyse and think things through for so long?

Gwendolyn had tried so hard to move on from her past. But… it was always there. Like a shadow. Some days the shadows were long and she had to run fast to escape them. Other days, the shadows were nowhere to be seen and she could see clearly in the bright midday sun.

As Gwendolyn rode the elevator up to her 21st floor office that overlooked the corner of the park, she listened to the tinny tunes being pumped into the elevator for her ‘driving pleasure’. She couldn’t help but smile. Life certainly had a way of reminding her of times past.

When the lift doors opened, she made her way through the impersonal cubicles of people hunched over phones, plugging their wares to hapless unsuspecting people. As she approached her office, her phone churped with notificiation of a message. The number was unfamiliar, but it gave her a jolt of both dread and excitement. The message simply said…

Gwendolyn bolted to the window. With her hands were pressed against the glass, she scanned the crowd below until he saw it. A huge pink love heart, drawn with chalk on the sidewalk. This could only mean one thing…

The boy. He must be back. And he was. Standing on the corner of the park, waving at her…

Ending on a mysterious note…

This was so much fun! I will put another story together soon – I have another week or so of pictures to catch up on!
