Fashion: How To Wear Neon When You Are Over 35.

I don’t shy away from many colours, but the neon colours are causing me some second guessing. I wore fluro pink socks when I was five, when WHAM were rocking it and Madonna was just a Material Girl. To see neon in stores again and to see teenagers wearing it with pride is a bit too much like de ja vu for me…

But, with neon colours EVERYWHERE I have had to rethink things. I am not a teeny-bopper anymore, but I would still like to keep some fingers on the fashion trend pulse. But, I will not sell my soul wholey and souly to neon. For me it will be about adding little touches of neon to keep things looking fresh and bright.

Here are some lookbooks that I have put together to help me {and hopefully you} see that wearing neon CAN be a grown up thing to do too!

How To Wear Neon When You Are Over 35

Above - Stripes – Yes please! Cobalt Blue – Yes again! Add a bit of neon yellow and you have a fresh, modern and fun outfit.

Where this will take you - You could wear this relaxed, comfortable and effortless outfit most places… Especially in Spring! Think shopping, out for lunch, school events, work… I think this would be very versatile.

Above - High Wasted Shorts – Yes Please! Striped T – Yes Again! Cute sandals and a Gucci bag – why yes please.
Where this will take you – This would be a great everyday SAHM outfit… It could be worn for school drop offs, popping into the shops or a weekend play in the park. {Oh and if you don’t think you can pull of shorts, try for a cute a-line skirt or some ankle biter jeans – just make sure you add some colour!}

Above - Cute dress – oooh yes please! Patent accessories – of course!
Where this will take you – Neon needn’t be totally casual. It can be dressed up. This outfit would take you to a casual wedding, dinner with a cute hubster or any number of night time events.

Have I persuaded you to add some neon into your wardrobe?

Hmmm, I didn’t think it possible, but I actually like some of those outfits, especially the orange! But I’m not going to rush out and buy neon right this minute, it’s still a reminder of that dark, dim past of the teenage years…….

  2. You certainly have and not a WHAM t-shirt in sight! I actually saw a neon TS14+ shirt the other day I liked (though they didn’t have my size), but if I find one I might give that a whirl….

    • Some parts of the 80s were cool … let’s not bring back Mullets though… Lets just stick with spots, stripes and neons…

  13. My SIL took me shopping on the weekend & was trying to convince me I needed more colour in my wardrobe. I couldn’t bring myself to do the neon but now you’ve got me thinking I could give it a shot! Love these posts x

    • Awww… thanks Nee. I love making these posts and could do one a day – but don’t want to overload people with them!

Well I bit the bullet today and bought a gorgeous black maxi dress and then I noticed that the pattern on the front has touches of neon in it!! And I hadn’t even noticed! Might wear it to my job interview tomorrow, or not, depends on how I’m feeling in the morning! So, I’m back in the trendy fashion stakes, for this season at least…..

    • You are always trendy! It rhymes with your name afterall!

You looked supercute in your chevron maxi skirt and summer colours today – so fresh!

Nice to have such a groovy big sister!

  15. I love these combinations. I normally do not wear neon colors as I prefer nature-y colors and black. But I do own a couple of shoes with neon color. One is yellow, the other one is orange with a multi-colored heel. The trick is to never overdo it with neon colors. Pair it up with something that can neutralize its shocking quality.
