Fashion: French Chic 1 – Neutrals {Day Wear}

French Chic Neutrals Day Wear

I have been doing a lot of reading and googling about French style, which has been very fun! In every book, blog, website and magazine article I have read, NEUTRALS and BASICS play a big part in a French Woman’s Wardrobe.

I love the idea of basics, staples, things that you wear in a variety of ways for a variety of occasions.

I also love the idea of neutrals. Colours and shades of colours that can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the ocassion.

Polyvore is the BEST place to play with clothes… I can dream and ogle over colours and textures and styles while sipping cappaccino and keeping half and eye on my children {not to mention the deep breaths my credit card takes}.

Here are 10 items that I would consider ‘Basics’… It is waaaay more beigey-whitey-tan than I have in my wardrobe, but I thought 10 was such a neat number.

French Chic_ Neutrals - 10 Basics - PolyvoreWhat you have here:

  • A fabulous off white shirt dress – can be dressed up or down or even layered
  • A stunning metallic tunic, great for night or dressy day wear
  • A loose fitting knit
  • A fabulous wool coat, that is just a little bit different
  • A ‘Piano Teacher Top’: this is lace, and has a bow and is gorgeous
  • A cute skirt that can be dressed up or down
  • A pair of neutral jeans – these are floral, but would cut it as neutral
  • A fabulous sparkly handbag which will match anything
  • Two pairs of shoes: a stylish snake skin kitten heel and a beige Oxford loafer

Now, how to wear them…

Below are 7 outfits that incorporate these items. A change of shoes or some colourful accessories can do wonders for these Neutral Basics…

Oh, and all of the outfits are very suitable to Paris…. therefore they have all been labelled with where they would be best suited…

Most of these outfits are quite tailored, which again, is so typically French. They love well made, stylish clothes. These outfits would be great for many a day time escape {the last one was just too pretty to not include here…}.

I hope that these sets help you to see basics or staples in your wardrobes in a new way. ‘Neutral’ to some may also be black or grey {I wear a LOT of grey and not so much of the whitey/tanny kinds of neutrals} so just decide what are your basics: those good quality, well made, figure flattering clothes in your wardrobe that just need a bit of zingaling to bring them into the NOW look…

Some tips for the coming season…

HOT – metallics, pointy toed shoes, bold stripes.

If you can add any of these elements to those basic staples, you will look well ‘turned out’ every time.

What is your favourite, must have item in your wardrobe that you would consider a staple?
